The Dallas Lace Society

Fourth Quarter Fall Newsletter

November 2022

President’s Review of October Business Meeting

Well fall has finally arrived and we enjoyed our Milanese workshop with Louise. Some were making owls, some paisleys, some sunflowers, and some were completing previously begun pieces. As always, Louise was patient, kind and efficient. She kept us all moving forward. We enjoy working her creative designs.

We have been anxiously awaiting Arthiss’s weekly list of duplicate books. I hope you have added some new titles to your library. Arthiss added about 50 new titles to our library thanks to the generous donations of members and their families. She also has received $284 in donations for 60 duplicates. I think we can all agree that Arthiss is the best librarian ever!

The IOLI convention for 2023 will be held in Sparks/Reno Nevada from June 25 to July 2. There are still not many details on the IOLI website (internationalorganizationoflace.org) so keep an eye out.

The Christmas party will be held the second Saturday of December, the 10th at the library. We will begin setup at 11 and lunch at noon with lace exchanges, door prizes, and raffle following. Kelly will be coordinating food so let her know what you plan to bring. Stacy is coordinating decoration and requested that anyone that has a Christmas tablecloth bring it for the tables. She doesn’t like adding all that plastic to the landfill. Contact her if you have any questions. If you have a lace ornament you would like to hang on the tree for all to see bring it along.

Definition of the Lace Exchange: You make a piece of lace, put it in some sort of container/wrapping and sneakily set it on the table so no one knows whose it is. You’ll be given a number if you bring lace to share and after lunch those who have a number will take turns choosing a present and opening it for all to admire. All pieces of lace are cherished, simple or complex.

The door prizes are usually donated lace making items or whatever you think might interest your friends. You will receive a number that will be called to give you your turn to pick a door prize.

The raffle tickets are $1 each and you place one side of the ticket in the container in front of the item you would like to have and hold on to the other side. Then a number is drawn and you claim you prize if it is your number.

Next year the convention in Sparks/Reno is honoring members who are no longer with us. We thought of Lou Rilla Hughes, Pat Kuhler, Pat Maca, Velosta Jurick, Mary Ellen Beaty, Roz Dorkin, Ruth Hickman, Nancy Washburn, and Ruth Leatherwood. Most of these ladies were no longer attending meetings by the time I, and many of us, joined the group so we will be depending on those of you who knew them to share your memories, stories and photos of these ladies with us so that we can create a nice memory page. You can pick a person or persons to write about and collect additional information on them from others. If you don’t have photos we probably can find some in the Historian’s files. Or you can send your memories and we can compile them. Elena plans to write about Lou Rilla Hughes. I have received a few comments about other ladies but not enough to write a brief bio. I hope some of you can assist.

Our last item of new business was a discussion about hosting an IOLI convention. IOLI provides a lot of assistance to the host group and the other lace groups in Texas will surely help us. Sherry Mathers has asked if we would enjoy hosting the 2025 convention in the Dallas area. It was decided that we would gather more information about what would be required of us, disseminate that information, and then vote at the January 31st business meeting. There will be a form to fill out notifying IOLI that we have an interest. I will send that information around as soon as I get it.
