The Dallas Lace Society

Second Quarter Summer Newsletter

August 2022

President’s letter – Aug. 2022

Hello my fellow lace-makers. Hope that you are getting a lot of lace made in a well air conditioned spot.

We held our business meeting last Tuesday at the library and via zoom. Thank you to

those who were able to attend. It was good to see you all.

Louise’s Milanese workshop will be October 22, 23, and 24. Kathy Ogle will be contacting

you with pricing and details soon so that you can make your plans. It is always an

enjoyable workshop as we have some time with one another and an excellent, patient

teacher with very creative patterns for us to choose from. I hope you will be one of the

12 that than can join the workshop.

Arthiss was delighted to see all the wonderful books that Pat Kuhler’s daughter, Amy

, donated to our library. There were 125 items! About 50 of them are new to our library

and Arthiss will add those to the library and come up with a plan to distribute the

 duplicates.

Lisa, Susan, Sherry, Heather, Karen, Stacy, and I enjoyed the IOLI convention in Mesa.

Next year the convention is at The Nugget in Sparks/Reno, Nevada from June 25 to

 July 2, 2023.

If you recall, we honored Rowena, Elena and Opal as our members over 80 this year. That

gave us some good memories for our Historian to file. Next year the convention in

Sparks/Reno is honoring members who are no longer with us. We thought of Lou Rilla

Hughes, Pat Kuhler, Pat Maca, Velosta Jurick, Mary Ellen Beaty, Roz Dorkin, Ruth

Hickman, Nancy Washburn, and Ruth Leatherwood. Most of these ladies were no l

onger attending meetings by the time I, and many of us, joined the group so we will be

depending on those of you who knew them to share your memories, stories and photos of

these ladies with us so that we can create a nice memory page. You can pick a person or

persons to write about and collect additional information on them from others. If you

don’t have photos we probably can find some in the Historian’s files. Or you can send

your memories and we can compile them.

At convention we received our IOLI certificate in recognition of 1,093 volunteer hours

promoting lace and lace-making. These hours continue Dallas Lace Society’s certificatio

n as a member of IOLI. The following is a list from our by-laws of activities that can be

reported to Debbie as demonstration/volunteer hours:

Demonstration hours:

Making lace at public venues

Teaching lace to the public

Volunteer hours:

DLS Lace-ins

Phone calls and emails for DLS and/or IOLI

Minutes for them DLS quarterly meetings

DLS Newsletter

Membership book preparation and maintenance

Party or class preparation and cleanup

Maintaining and audition the financial concerns for DLS

Making lace for sale at DLS venues

Hospitality work

Maintaining DLS library

Wishing you all good lace days and no broken threads.

The Dallas Lace Society

Second Quarter Winter Newsletter

May 2022

President’s letter - May 2022

Hello dear lace-making friends. I thought I would give you a little summary of our April quarterly meeting in case you were unable to join us live or by zoom.
I imagine all of you have received, via electronic or mail, a copy of our new directory. Thank you to Kathy and Jackie for such a very nice directory. It was a fantastic idea to add photos and Jackie did her photo-shopping magic on the cover to show the Christmas ornaments we had made for display. Great job.
We have been working on the ‘Bobbin Bungees’ gifts for IOLI convention. We have a little over 300 ready to go but we decided to make 300 more so we can give two per person. We’ll be working on them at upcoming meetings. Arthiss and Jackie will get supplies ready and us organized once again. Thanks to all that are helping.
Some of us have also been tatting and bobbin lacing the 1/8th music note for the 2023 Nashville IOLI convention. If you need details on joining that let me know and I will forward you their instructions.
Just another reminder about Louise’s Milanese workshop this coming fall. It will be October 22, 23, and 24.
At the upcoming convention they are preparing a display of notebooks to honor lacers over 80. They are asking all lace groups to send in text about and photos of lace makers and their lace.
We will be honoring three who have contributed so much to our group, Rowena, Elena, and Opal. More to come in a future email.
We have two new members. Amber Pyle has been teaching herself some lace-making skills and is a very accomplished tatter and needle lacer. She lives in Granbury so I appreciate her making the long trek to come to our meetings.

Lilly Allison of Irving joined too and brought Rowena with her. We were so excited to see Rowena and meet Lilly. Rowena has been teaching Lilly Torchon and she is a very good student. Welcome Amber and Lilly, I’m sure we all look forward to getting to know you more.

Beautiful lace making to you all,

Marilyn

The Dallas Lace Society

First Quarter Winter Newsletter

February 2022

President’s letter, January 2022

Here we are into a new year. I hope everyone is staying safe, well, and happy. Also having a little time to be inspired and make some lace.
Speaking of inspired - Sherry Mathers mentions that her group is about to resume in person meetings and will start a group learning project to make a heart-shaped lace for February Heart Month. You could join the project via zoom by emailing Sherry for information at

skgoodym@satx.rr.com

Also, Susan Merritt sent information about a Flanders Lace competition. It is meant to stimulate interest in the design of “contemporary” Flanders lace. You can get all the information from the Kantcentrum website.

https://www.kantcentrum.eu/en/competition-flanders-lace-

Jackie and Kathy are working together to give us a directory with each of our photos by our name. It will help new people figure out who is who. Could even help us old timers since we get to see each other so seldom these days! If you haven’t sent a photo in yet you can send it to Kathy Ogle or Jackie Campbell.
W e have arranged to demo at the Dallas Quilt show at Market Hall on March 11, 12 and 13. Dorothy will be getting in touch to set up times. You can check out the details at quiltersguildofdallas.org
Registration is open for the IOLI convention to be held in Mesa Arizona July 16 to 22. Check it out on their website internationalorganizationoflace.org
Louise Colgan’s Milanese workshop will be held for us October 22, 23, and 24 so mark your calendars to join the fun. She will also be conducting a workshop for the San Antonio lace group on April 2, 3, and 4 so contact Sherry if you have an interest in attending that workshop.
We hung our lace ornaments on the tree Kelly brought for our Christmas party. It looked fantastic. Jackie, Stacy, Peggy, Kelly, Debbie, Kathy, and I proudly hung our masterpieces. We had great fun visiting, eating the good food, and picking our many, many prizes.
Jackie will be organizing the supplies and us so that we can finish cutting and assemble the bobbin holders that Arthiss designed and has been working on. We will give these as gifts from our lace group to the attendees of the 2022 IOLI convention. When one attends convention you come home with a nice pile of fun and helpful treasures from various lace groups.

Best wishes to you all and I hope to see you at a meeting soon,

Marilyn

The Dallas Quilt Guild is having their yearly quilt show at Market Hall on March 11-13, 2022. We plan to demonstrate every day so be thinking which day(s) you want to work. It's a great show with lots of interest in lace. It's also a good opportunity to find some interesting threads and notions as well as some beautiful quilts. You'll need to bring your own battery-powered lamp.
