The Dallas Lace Society

Third Quarter Summer Newsletter

August 2021

President’s letter - August 2021

Well we were feeling a bit free last month and getting out more but COVID has come

back with a vengeance so back to being more careful we go.

We had a nice in person and zoom meeting for our business meeting last month. Stacy,

Jackie, Pat and Donna joined me for lacing in the morning. It was fantastic lacing live!

Later Debbie came by and Norell and Kathy Ogle joined us via zoom.

We discussed Louise’s workshop scheduled in September and agreed we would host the

workshop. We have ten lacers planning to attend.

This was also the meeting where (per the by laws) we were to form a nomination

committee in preparation for voting in officers at the October meeting. We mus

t have an Executive Board consisting of a President, Vice President, Treasurer, and

Secretary. Linda had notified me that she did not wish to continue as treasurer. Sh

e has been our fabulous treasurer since 2007 and I know we all truly appreciate her

service. Stacy volunteered to be the treasurer again. Debbie who has been our dedic

ated secretary, for about that long I imagine, has graciously agreed to continue. Kathy

Ogle kindly volunteered to be Vice President but she already manages membership. I’m

sure she would appreciate it if someone else would step up to the position of Vice

President but I’m sure we are all grateful that she is willing. I could remain as president.

If anyone would like to volunteer for any of the positions please just let me know before

October so you can be added to the ballot. Your help is always welcomed.

We have decided not to demo at the State Fair but we did have entrants into the Bobbin

Lace category for the Arts and Crafts competition. It was fun to participate in

 something!

Hope you all stay well and safe,

Marilyn

Second Quarter Newsletter

May 2021

President’s letter - May 2021

We had another enjoyable zoom get-together. It was good to catch up with those that could attend.

It is very important that all members who have volunteered support services to the group, demonstrated lace, or attended a zoom meeting total their hours for Debbie’s report to IOLI. We are required a certain amount of hours to maintain our charter. The time period is from the last of April 2020 to the last of April 2021. Send the guestimate total to Debbie as soon as possible.

Activities are getting organized for the IOLI virtual convention. Registration will begin May 15 for members and June 1 for non members. Be sure to check it out at internationalorganizationoflace.org. There is a sneak peak of the classes that will be offered.

Sherry is working on a virtual display room of lace that has been or is being made, pictures of your favorite things, or anything related to lace that you would like to share. She will be sending out the details soon. Sherry is also organizing a virtual display highlighting each charter group. She would like one representational picture from each group. We discussed some ideas for our group. Arthiss suggested, if we got to work fast, we could each make a flower and create a garden picture of all of them together. Or maybe use butterflies and make a swarm (flock) picture. Another suggestion was a photo of our banner or a group photo. Perhaps everyone already has a bookmark made that we could collect and form into a picture. Any other suggestions? We would need to have it to Sherry by mid June.

Our biggest discussion was about having live meetings again. The library is only open for picking up books and brief browsing so that space is out of the question. The new library will be open sometime this summer but who knows if it will be open for meetings by then. You can check out the details about the new building at supportdpl.org, choose programs and then forest green wish list. As we discussed last month, we made a $200 donation.

Back to live meetings - we decided we could meet in someone’s home as long as we are vaccinated, could wear masks if that makes anyone more comfortable, and keep a good distance between us. Arthiss, Debbie and I offered our homes for meetings. If you think you would be interested in attending a live meeting please let me know. Kelly has offered to bring the party cart and snacks to the first meeting.

Our next business meeting will be August 3, 2021. A week late due to convention.

Best wishes to you all,

Marilyn

The Dallas Lace Society

First Quarter Newsletter

February 2021

Happy Valentines Day

Hello members of DLS,

I hope you are all staying well. We had a lively zoom business meeting this January. It was wonderful to see those that could join and to catch up with one another. We were very grateful to see Rowena and Arthiss looking stronger and feeling better. Unfortunately Dorothy has contracted COVID but so far not too ill. We certainly hope that it stays that way and no one else in the family becomes sick.

Our January zoom party went well. The exchanged gifts were all lovely. Sherry Mathers won the puzzle prize of Elena Cola’s Madonna and Peggy Talley won the door prize of Elena’s beautiful doily. We are always so excited that Elena shares her beautiful lace with us. We have 4 small doilies and a lot of tape lace and hearts that Elena uses for making her famous angels, dolls, and pillows to share when we can get back together again.

Kelly reported that the roof has gone onto the new branch of the library. Maybe it will be finished about the time that we are ready to have person to person meetings again. Can’t wait for that day!

We do have a Milanese workshop scheduled with Louise Colgan on September 25 to 27 of 2021. At this point, of course, we don’t know if we will be able to hold it or in what form it might be. Louise has been perfecting her remote teaching capabilities. Sherry Mathers and Heather Norris are taking a remote workshop with her soon so we anxiously await to see how that goes. Knowing Louise I’m sure it will be perfect. Can’t trust those internet goblins though.

Some of us have signed on for the workshop of March 5 to 7 put on by the Houston lace guild at Camp Allen near Navasota. Louise will be teaching a remote class and Judy Aycock will be guiding a class at Camp Allen. Our own Cathy Morris will be teaching a short course on Honiton lace. There are still some spots open if you have an interest. Contact Judy Aycock at jjalace@swbell.net for details.

Arthiss told us of some new library books that have been donated to us. She will send Kelly a list and Kelly will post it on DLS Facebook and/or blogspot. Contact Arthiss if you would like to check out any of these books or others. We also voted to purchase a USB version of Idrija Narrow Tape Lace Techniques (uses few bobbins!) from Henkel Productions. Allie Marguccio is the instructor. This is the group that produced Louise’s Milanese Hummingbird video that so many of us have used to begin Milanese lace. Check with Arthiss in a few weeks if you would like to borrow the new Idrija USB.

We also discussed whether we would want to demonstrate at the Plano Quilt Show scheduled for October 8 - 9 of 2021. We gave a tentative “yes” as we will have to see how safe we feel as October nears.

We have listings in our directory of Charter Members and of members who have been voted Honorary Lifetime Members. However we would like some way of noting members that have died during the years. Maybe a listing in the directory each year of those who have passed or some other way of keeping track. Kelly will be collecting information to get this organized and she and Kathy will decide how or if it should be in the directory. If you have any information or ideas please let them know.

Susan Merritt mentioned that Karen Hickman could point you to some good videos about making Czech lace. karenhic@yahoo.com.

Kathy reminds us to send in our $15 membership dues for 2021. Be sure to let her know of an emergency contact if you would like that listed in the directory.

That is a brief summary of our quarterly business meeting. Hope to see you on zoom soon, Marilyn

Marilyn Waisanen Point Ground Study

Hi my fellow lacers,

It was so fun to see those who could attend our zoom business meeting and catch up on what is going on. It was wonderful to see Rowena looking so lovely and strong in spite of all the terrible treatments she has to endure. Fabulous Arthiss was able to be upright and looking great in spite of her battles with back pain. I know we all wish them the very best.

We voted to continue our support of the library by contributing our usual $30 this quarter. Kathy Ogle reports that there is progress being made at the new library location.

The winners have been announced for the Bobbin Lace categories of the State Fair. The ladies that collect the items and organize them in the display cases did so again this year. Even though there were no Fair attendees they still loaded the display cases and took photos. Such dedication. It is difficult to find the photos at BigTex.com but Arthiss persevered and sent the below instructions. Check it out if you have the time to sort through a couple of hundred photos. Arthiss found them on her phone and I found the instructions worked on my laptop too.

1) search: “State Fair of Texas photos facebook”
2) click on website link
3) click “photos”
4) click “see all”
5) click “2020 arts and crafts 200 photos”
6) click on the big photo and then scroll through

We can congratulate Arthiss on winning first place in original design with her “Seasons”and second place in adapted design for her neck scarf. Stacy took third in adapted design for her Idrija “Water”. I took first place in adapted design for the heart shaped point ground exercises I have been doing. I think the ladies liked the frame. Hopefully next year more of you will enter. It really is fun and the ladies who take in all the items are so encouraging.

Linda Cole announced that the Dallas Quilt Show for 2021 has been canceled.

Susan Merritt mentioned a post on Facebook that highlights lace suppliers. It starts with “Lace Suppliers Spotlight Intro – Louise West Lace Design”. She explains the concept and below the questions are some items to look at. Evidently new ones will be posted every week.

We discussed what we could do in place of our Christmas party. Unfortunately, nothing that involves all of us getting together and sharing a meal! We also decided to push it to January 16. We thought we could at least do a lace exchange. If you would like to participate you would just let me know. Then there will be a drawing to match you with another participant. You would mail your item to the person you were paired with by January 8 so that it would be sure to arrive at their home by January 16. Before you mail it please take a picture of it and email it to Kelly so she can post them after the zoom party. If you don’t have the equipment to do that perhaps the person you are mailing it to would be able to send the photo to Kelly. Then on January 16 at 2 PM we will have a very special zoom party to show off all of our beauties and catch up with everyone. As usual, you may certainly join the party even if you don’t participate in the lace exchange.

Best wishes to all of you in these troubled times.

Marilyn

Christmas/New Years' Party

January 16th 2 pm on ZOOM

If you wish to participate in the lace exchange, please let Marilyn know ASAP. You will be paired, by random draw, with another participant. You will be notified who you will send your piece to by January 8th, so they will receive it by the 16th. Please take a photo of it before sending it out and send the photo via text or email to Kelly (kellysarah@msn.com or 214-616-0066) so it can be postsed for the party.

We hope many of you will be able to join the “party” whether you join the exchange or not. We will be sending out the zoom link before the party. If you have never Zoomed or have questions, contact kelly or Marilyn for help getting set up.
