Covid 19 continues...

Hello my fellow lacers,

I certainly hope that all of you are doing well, staying healthy, and finding ways to entertain yourselves with some lace making during this quarantine. There can be so much added stress due to Covid-19 but I hope all you have found healthy coping techniques. We are all anxious about when we can feel safer in public and what our daily lives will be like in the future. Just remember to always aspire to be kind (the word kind has so many beautiful synonyms).

We have had two successful and fun Zoom chat/business meetings. It was wonderful to “see” all of you that could join. As you might imagine there wasn’t a lot of business to zoom about. Thanks to all who could report. We accepted the April minutes and the financial report that Debbie and Linda submitted and that were emailed to the group. Dorothy would love any suggestions for demonstrations that we could do in spite of quarantine. Kelly is always looking for items for the newsletter so please send her your ideas, photos of lace, lace book reviews, or anything you think we might be interested in. We will schedule another zoom chat in a couple of weeks but maybe we’ll try an evening to accommodate those who can’t zoom during the day.

I have spoken with Louise about our scheduled late September workshop and we've agreed to reschedule it for Sept. 25 thru the 27th of 2021.

I send my best wishes to you all,

Marilyn

President of the Dallas Lace Society

Workshops

The Teneriffe Lace Class was really great! Dorothy Morgan supplied the group with everything needed to make several projects.

We have scheduled our Fall Workshop with Louise Colgan for Sept. 26 – 28, 2020 with Louise Colgan. Stay tuned for more details.

Demos

We just had a demo for the Dallas Textile Guild on February 13th. Dorothy gave a very informative presentation on the history of lace making. The group was full of others who play with string and we were will received.

Our next demonstration is scheduled for March 13, 14, & 15 at the Dallas Quilt Show at Market Hall. It's an annual event that's always a lot of fun.

We also will be setting up for a demo at C.C. Young on March 19th at 10am. Our demo will run for a couple of hours and we will need several volunteers so let us know if you would like to participate.

Letter from the President

Dear lacemaking friends,

Fall is finally here! Our Christmas Party will be here before we know it. The date is December 14 from noon to 3ish. Stacy has agreed to decorate our room at the library. (Hopefully next year will be at the new library!) Kelly will be taking RSVPs so that we know how many place settings to prepare and she will keep track of who is bringing what for the potluck luncheon.

At the party we will have door prizes, raffle items, and the lace exchange. If you have any items (they do not have to be lace related) to donate for raffle or door prizes, please bring them that day. The lace exchange, in case you are new to this, is as follows: You bring a lace item you have made, wrapped so no one can tell what it is or who it is from, and place it in the center of the table (discretely). Then, after lunch, numbers are drawn and, in turn, each lacer that contributed an item gets to pick an item. We all get to enjoy seeing what everyone has been working on. Even if you are thinking “I’m too new to lace, no one will want my item”, forget that. We still love to have your items and see your progress. We were all there once! or twice! or ………

We enjoyed our demo time at the Plano Quilt Show and did some much needed(?) shopping. Thanks to Debbie, Kathy, Kelly, Linda, Stacy and myself for volunteering. Next came our day at the State Fair. Always a fun and busy time. Thanks to Debbie, Kathy, Kelly, Pat, Stacy and myself for volunteering. Now let’s hope for new members.

We had some beautiful pieces winning prizes in the State Fair this year. For original design in Bobbin Lace, Arthiss won first place with her sunflowers. Kelly won first place for her tatted grape bunch. Lisa won first place in needle lace. Interpreted Bobbin Lace design, Stacy won First Place with her Phoenix, Kathy was Second with her Flamingo, Kelly was Third with her Fish, and Debbie was Honorable Mention with her Fan. Kelly will be posting pictures of the winners and their items. I hope even more of you will participate in 2020.

Of course, Louise’s workshop was a great hit. Thanks to Debbie and Doug for hosting and to all who were able to attend. I’m seeing some delightful items being finished. She will return on Sept 26, 27, and 28 of 2020 so mark your calendar.

Dorothy has offered to teach us Tenerife lace making, and Kathy has invited us to east Texas. Now we just need to pick a date sometime in the early spring of 2020.

The classes and teachers for IOLI 2020 in Mesa, Arizona have not been announced yet, but the hotel is taking reservations. Be sure to mention that you are attending the IOLI convention to get the special rate. It will be at the Hilton Phoenix/Mesa and the local phone number is 480 833 5555.

Another workshop opportunity is the Winter Lace Conference in Costa Mesa, California on February 14 through 16. For more details contact Belinda Belisle at WinterLaceConference@gmail.com or visit http://winterlaceconference.com.

Best to you all,
Marilyn
