BOOKS FOR ADOPTION

Arthiss has been very busy "editing" our library and has run across several editions that you might be interested in.  The link below will take you to a list of the current items we have to offer.  A donation to our group would be much appreciated too!

Letter from the President

Dear Members,

We began our spring with a very enjoyable and informative workshop with Judy Aycock. We were all challenged by Buckspoint and Floral Bucks but we learned a lot under Judy’s patient tutelage and I have seen some great progress made by those in attendance. A lot of “light bulb” moments are happening! Debbie and Doug’s gracious hosting made for a very relaxed and comfortable vibe which, I’m sure, inspired our lacemaking. We enjoyed seeing our out-of-town friends Susan Merritt, Sherry Mathers and Heather Norris. Arthiss has a great line up of workshops for us this coming year and next.

At the April business meeting the minutes prepared by Debbie were approved as submitted. It is great to have someone who can organize all our chatter. Linda Cole reported that we currently have 33 members and our finances are in order. Rowena has been conveying our birthday wishes, get well thoughts and sympathy messages to our members. Please let her know of any important events in our member’s lives. She is also, as Historian, glad to receive any items that the group should be saving. Be sure to label the item and note the names of those involved. Arthiss is exploring ideas for better organizing our library. We are fortunate to have a member with her experience in managing library materials. Thanks to Kelly for keeping us informed and increasing our internet visibility. What a team!

Unfortunately, Dorothy no longer has the time to organize demonstration events so if there is anyone ready to help with that please let me know. Upcoming events will be the Plano Quilt Show August 12-13, 2016, State Fair in the fall, and the Dallas Quilt Show March 10-12, 2017. Grateful thanks to Dorothy for all the many years she has been organizing our demonstrations.

State Fair has released their 2016 Competition Handbook at bigtex.com. Page 43 gives the details for entering. Original Bobbin Lace is category 1153 and Adapted is 1154. Junior (12 – 17) category is Original 1191 and Adapted 1192. Hope you all will enter and item or two.

We have recently discovered that the library, once again, opens at 10 AM on Tuesday.  We decided at the business meeting not to change our official meeting time (12 to 3) just yet but some Tuesday regulars plan to arrive at 11 like we used to and take advantage of the ability to begin earlier.  We’ll see how this goes for a few months and then revisit our options.
Hope to see you there - at any time you can come,

See you at lace,

Marilyn

This year we are looking for patterns for the beginning lacemaker! Although, any level of skill is greatly appreciated. This is a great way to continue our mission to promote and teach lacemaking. By giving our Charter Chapters a CD with patterns, it helps them continue to teach lace to their members and hold workshops to perhaps gain more members.

If you have something to add to the 2016 Gift CD you may send it to me at president@internationalorganizationoflace.org  If you can please send them by PDF format.

1st Quarter Meeting - 2016

The Dallas Lace Society
First Quarter Newsletter
January 2016

Letter from the President

Dear Members,

Here we are, a month into the new year already! I hope your holidays went well and you are having more time for lacing. Our Christmas party was great fun and the room looked very festive with the lovely décor that was added. We had beautiful items for the lace exchange and some very useful and lovely raffle and door prize items. As always, we were all crossing our fingers to win one of Elena’s special creations in the raffle. Of course the food was yummy.

Stacy and I are planning our next road trip to the IOLI convention in Indianapolis this July. Neither of us have been there before so we are looking forward to seeing new scenery and hopefully a few less corn fields than the trip to Iowa. We’ll start checking out the food sources along the route real soon.

I hope all of you are considering entering an item in the State Fair this year. The site isn’t ready for 2016 yet but entry forms and mail-in entries are due mid July. The site, Bigtex.com, should be updated by early spring. They are not sure of the theme yet – something agricultural. Not very helpful if you want to plan a lace piece that fits the theme!

Dorothy is organizing some demonstration opportunities and I encourage even the beginning lacers to participate. It is fun meeting the visitors and hanging with your lacing buds.

Thank you to our board members and committee members who volunteered for two more years and to the new volunteers who have joined in to help with the business end of our organization. I know it eats into your hobby time but we are all so thankful for your service that keeps our group together and growing.

Looking forward to seeing you at lace meetings,
            Marilyn

Letter from the President

Dear Members,

Thank you all for your support of Dallas Lace Society. We do make a wonderful group, don't we.
Congratulations to all who entered the state fair. I had fun doing it and I hope you did too. Hopefully more will give it a try next year. The demonstration day went well too, in spite of the location.
Louise's Milanese class was fantastic as always and we voted, at the business meeting, to invite her back next year. I got the privilege of having her and a few of our other out-of-town members stay with me during the class. I enjoyed their company so much and we had a fun evening at the state fair watching pig races and eating cotton candy.
Hope to see you all at meetings and the Christmas party.

Summer Newsletter

Hi Lacers,
We have had three successful Saturday meetings now and are looking forward to our next one on July 12.  There has been a good mixture of beginners and those who know enough to help beginners and we are enjoying seeing what everyone is working on.

We had a productive business meeting on April 29th.  We signed the contract to have Louise Colgan teach a workshop September 26 to 28 of 2015.  If anyone has an idea for a workshop they would like in 2014 please let me know and we’ll see what we can do.  We have five new items in the library.  We made $141.00 on lace sales at the Texas Discovery Gardens gift shop.

If you know of a member who is in need of some well wishes from us please let Rowena know.

Linda and Rita Cole found a fun thread store on Rita’s last visit to the big city.  It is Threads That Bind, mainly a quilting shop but some fun threads too.  It is on the southeast quadrant of Park and Independence in Plano.  Their website is threadsthatbindoftexas.com.  Linda has also been looking at threads at these websites:
http://www.redrockthreads.com/aurifil-thread/
https://www.valdani.com/products
www.superiorthreads.com

If you come across any interesting ideas or products please let us know so we can share them.  Susan is always looking for your photos of lace and interesting ideas to add to our website too.

Looking forward to seeing your projects,
Marilyn

Next business meeting: July 29 @ 12:30
Lace demo at the Quilt Plano: August 15-16

February-March Newsletter

Hello fellow lacers,
I hope that the New Year has begun well for everyone and you have found time for your lace projects.  I am so close to finishing my butterfly fillings from Louise’s Milanese class in late September…..
Thanks to all of you for supporting your new Board.  Thankfully Debbie and Linda will continue their fantastic work as secretary and treasurer.  We are thankful to have Ellie’s burst of new energy as Vice President.  We are so pleased that Dorothy will continue writing our newsletter and scheduling demonstrations, and Rowena will continue sending greetings on our behalf.  Be sure to let us know of any ideas you may have for educational opportunities, newsletter stories, or ways to enhance our organization and build our membership.
Keep an eye out at Dallas Morning News for an article about us written by Connie Dufner.  It should be out in February.
Linda will be sending out the new directories and library listings soon.  If you would like a copy of my Excel sheet of library listings I can forward that to you via email.  It is handy if you would like to sort it by title, author or type of lace to quickly find an entry.  There are copies of each sort in the library bag I bring to the Tuesday meetings for your perusal.
On January 28th we had our first business meeting of the year.  We had a discussion about Saturday meetings and agreed that we would like to have one a month.  We are waiting for the library to tell us if we may have the room.  Thanks to those of you who sent in your comments for the meeting.  We will notify you as soon as we have the location details worked out.
Thank you for continuing your membership in Dallas Lace Society and I look forward to lacing with you all.  Now – back to those fillings.

                                                                   Sincerely,
                                                                   Marilyn Waisanen, President
